Year 6 blog:
Day two at Skern Lodge began with a fry up and another action-packed plan ahead. After breakfast, we set off on a beautiful beach walk, winding along the coast and through the charming town of Appledore. The children loved exploring the shoreline, especially the rock pools, which were full of hidden treasures. We spotted strawberry anemones, wriggly little fish, crabs scuttling about, and even some slippery strands of bladderwrack seaweed. There was something magical about seeing marine life up close, being able to use our science and geography lessons in the real world!
After our walk and some sightseeing in Appledore, we returned to base for lunch and a bit of a refuel before our afternoon adventure: kayaking! The children did brilliantly navigating their kayaks across the water, building confidence with every paddle. And the best part? Getting to jump in at the end! There were splashes, laughter, and a few very proud faces.
Dinner this evening was hearty and well-earned. A choice of chicken pie, noodles, or nachos, followed by a delicious strawberry pudding.
Before our evening activity, we had a quick game of cricket on the field and some spontaneous dancing. Then we gathered together for our much-anticipated campfire.
As the sky darkened, flames flickered, and we roasted marshmallows, sang songs (including a brand-new campfire tune we all learnt together), and even lit our own fires using flints — a real survival skills moment that had everyone feeling accomplished. The glow of the fire, the laughter, and the sound of singing created the perfect end to a brilliant day. We finished the night with birthday cake provided by the birthday boy.
With full bellies, warm hearts, and tired feet, the children headed to bed, already dreaming of tomorrow’s adventures.
