Yaer 6 blog:

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to step into a university for a whole week?

Last week, our group got to do just that on our IntoUni trip, exploring STEM, teamwork, and thinking about our futures. Each day was packed with exciting activities that left us inspired and buzzing with ideas. Here’s how our week unfolded:

Monday – Getting Started

On arrival at the centre, we split into teams named after STEM pioneers. Fuelling our competitive spirits, the IntoUni team set us a team goal of earning 200 points across the week through teamwork, effort, and success. We soon began exploring engineering—civil, aerodynamic (yes, paper planes!) and electrical circuits—and researched STEM pioneers like Alan Turing and Mae Jemison.

Tuesday – Bridges & Creativity

Can a bridge really hold the weight of your ideas? On Tuesday, we became civil engineers. We explored different types of bridges before using recycled materials to create our own. The challenge? Making it durable enough to withstand the strength tests! In the afternoon, we revisited our research and began creating group posters, sharing what we’d learned about our STEM heroes.

Wednesday – Titanic at Seacity Museum

Which day could top building bridges? For most of us, it was Wednesday! We took a coach to the Seacity Museum, where history came alive. We had a guided tour, explored fascinating exhibits, and participated in a Titanic workshop. How could an ice cube tray with 12 compartments teach us about such a famous disaster? Surprisingly well! After the workshop, we wandered through the museum at our own pace, trying on 1900s clothing and learning intriguing facts along the way. Did you know the eight musicians onboard continued to play until the very end?

Thursday – Dreaming About the Future

Ever wanted to know more about university life? We did! We interviewed Mrs Wood and Mr Ferguson to learn about their experiences, explored prospectuses, and discovered everything university has to offer. Inspired, we wrote our own goals on leaves for our tree and shared them aloud with the group, rehearsing for graduation. In the afternoon, we brought our STEM figures to life through drama and practised our presentations for Friday.

Friday – Southampton & Graduation

A real taste of university! We toured the University of Southampton campus, asked current students about their experiences, visited the Student Hub, and even explored the impressive five-storey library. Then came the big moment: graduation! Parents arrived, beaming from ear to ear, and nerves kicked in. We performed our drama based on STEM pioneers, shared our goal leaves, and received certificates for our hard work. We had officially graduated!

Across the week, we had so much fun thinking about careers and university, developing teamwork and communication, and experiencing STEM in hands-on, creative ways. Into Uni was inspiring, educational, and a week we’ll never forget!
