Year 4 blog:

It has been a busy and exciting start to the Summer Term in Year 4, with lots of engaging learning taking place across the curriculum. The children have shown great enthusiasm, curiosity and creativity, and we are delighted to share some of what they have been learning.

In Writing, we have begun our new unit on Twisted Fairy Tales. To immerse ourselves in the genre, we explored a range of traditional fairy tales, acted them out and created S-maps to demonstrate our understanding of the stories. We then discussed the different ways authors can "twist" a familiar tale, considering how stories can be adapted for humour, suspense, horror or by retelling events from a different character's perspective. The children have already generated some fantastic and imaginative ideas, and we are looking forward to seeing their own twisted fairy tales come to life over the coming weeks.

In Maths, we have been exploring both 2D and 3D shapes. The children have been identifying and comparing different shapes, using mathematical vocabulary to describe their properties, including sides, vertices, angles, faces and edges. They have investigated symmetry, learned how to identify lines of symmetry in 2D shapes, and explored how shapes can be classified according to their properties. Through practical activities and problem-solving tasks, the children have developed their understanding of shape and spatial reasoning.

Our Science topic this term has been Animals Including Humans. We have focused on teeth and their important roles in the digestive process, learning about the different types of teeth and how they help us bite, tear and grind food. The children have also explored how to keep their teeth healthy through good oral hygiene and healthy lifestyle choices. One of the highlights of the topic was carrying out an experiment to investigate the effects of sugary and acidic drinks on tooth enamel. Using eggs to represent teeth, we placed them in different liquids and observed the changes to the shell over time. The children made thoughtful observations and linked their findings to the importance of looking after their own teeth.

In RE, we have been exploring the concept of God. The children have considered what God might mean to different religions and individuals, and have discussed why some people choose to turn to God in different situations. Through thoughtful discussion and reflection, they have demonstrated respect for a range of beliefs and perspectives.

In Geography, we have started our new unit on continents and climate zones, with a particular focus on Europe. The children have used their map skills to locate countries within Europe and have begun exploring the different climate zones found across the continent. They have enjoyed comparing different regions and considering how climate can influence the way people live.

In DT, we are working towards designing and creating bug hotels. The children have researched the importance of insects within ecosystems and explored why bug hotels can provide valuable habitats for a variety of creatures. They have investigated suitable materials and are currently considering the specific needs of different insects as they begin planning their own designs.

Finally, in Reading, we have been enjoying The Boy at the Back of the Class. This has linked brilliantly to our previous learning about refugees and our recent theatre trip to watch the stage adaptation of the book. The children have engaged thoughtfully with the story, exploring its themes of friendship, kindness, empathy and belonging, while analysing how different characters are presented throughout the text.

We are incredibly proud of the enthusiasm and hard work the children have shown so far this term and look forward to sharing more of their achievements in the coming weeks.
